JON McLAUGHLIN — ALL THE THINGS I SAY TO MYSELF
In 2021, our friend Jon McLaughlin released his excellent seventh album, ALL THE THINGS I SAY TO MYSELF. The album continues and expands Jon's narrative ruminations on love and relationships, against his signature (and brilliant) piano-based and ultra-melodic writing style.
Absorb. created the entire visual campaign for the album, including design, photo, film, merchandising and web assets. With source recorded material and a title that reflected the artist's "inner monologue", we decided to create multiple solo scenarios of Jon "alone with his thoughts" to represent the album.
The music video and primary album photography were shot on the same day. We shot photos of Jon in luminous black and white, with a single spotlight creating a "lonesome", classic silhouette. All design elements were built around these photos, in which Jon conveys multiple attitudes and poses. We're particularly fond of the limited edition white vinyl version of the album.
For lead single "Why It Hurts", we filmed a highly-coordinated music video which features a single, uninterrupted Steadicam shot for the first two-and-a-half minutes. Jon is seen mixing choreography, performance, and interaction with multiple "self-soothing" scenarios before the film culminates in a solo spotlight dance scene, tying the filmed visuals back to the album art and photographed components.
